Sorting through the scores of hi-tech features of modern sport wear can be extremely confusing and stressful. Here are a few tips to help you decide what’s useful and what’s not, and which –if any– live up to the hype. [Read more...]

I love my MacBook and my Canon SLR — I certainly couldn’t produce this blog without them. The little things rarely get much praise, but can be just as important in making travel an enjoyable experience. Here are three unsung heroes that I’ll never leave behind again. [Read more...]

I’ve continued to whittle away at the chiropractic nightmare that is my backpack, mostly by ditching a small item here or there, or clothing I wasn’t using. It all added up to a few pounds in savings, but a recent trip with just my daypack convinced me it was time to cut deeper. [Read more...]

After the technical clothing fiasco, I ran out and bought myself a couple of shirts from a tourist-oriented street vendor in Banglamphoo. They’re made out of this radical light-weight, paper-thin, fast-drying material called cotton. They’re both a bit hippy-ish and I paid double what they were really worth, of course, but the Thai markets don’t exactly stock a lot of clothing in the husky sizes. I wear one while leaving the other to soak in the sink. [Read more...]

Vagabond Travel Tip #3 — Don’t Forget the Friendly Hat

Many years ago, I packed all of my belongings into storage and set out on a solo three-month motorcycle trip through the American West, visiting all of the major national parks. After a couple of weeks, I noticed that I really wasn’t meeting people and was getting rather desperate for conversation.

Contest! Guess the Weight of My Backpack and Win a Magic Amulet

One of the first places I intend to visit in Bangkok is the Buddhist Amulet Market by the Chao Praya River. The Thai people seriously love their amulets and wear them constantly for protection or blessings of all kinds. It’s windproof, reasonably waterproof, and only weighs 1 pound. I also picked up a cheap silk sleep sheet at the same time, saving $15 off the [...]

Gear Review: Booq Vyper XS3 MacBook Case

I have to admit that it seems a little silly to review a laptop sleeve, given the ridiculous amount of gear I’ll be taking with me. But the truth is that I love this thing — it’s easily the best laptop protection I’ve ever owned. I intend to review or comment on the usefulness of [...]

My 3 Best Kept Travel Secrets

Here’s the deal: Katie at Tripbase had the very clever idea to post her best 3 travel secrets, then ‘tag’ 5 others to post theirs. Jodi at LegalNomads was kind enough to tag me, so I’m gonna take my best stab at it. I’m arriving late to the party (as usual), so I suspect most [...]
