Photos: The Peaceful River Town of Nong Khiaw

Nong Khiaw is a tiny, quiet river town in the north of Laos. It’s accessible by boat and bus (take the boat) and is a wonderful place to relax and spend a few days watching the river flow by.

The town straddles both sides of the river, with most accommodation being found on the east side, across from the boat landing. Simple bungalows hug the shore and offer nice views of the river and the surrounding mountains. I spent $4 a night for my very basic place, but there are also more luxurious options available if you want more comfort.
There’s very little traffic, despite this being the only bridge across the river for 50 kilometers or more. I stayed four days and was never approached by a tout or hassled to buy anything. It’s wonderfully laid-back and quiet.

Looks like a beautiful little village.
Great pics! I love the last one of the girl riding her bike.
Thanks, Jaime. She was lovely and gave me a slight smile as she passed.
Really wants more to add a little incursion into Laos on a future trip to Asia
Lovely pictures Wes. Was there in December and your pictures bring back happy memories. Did you eat at Delila’s? Nicest lady in the whole of Laos.
Hmmm… I missed that. I found a *fantastic* Indian place and ate there three nights in a row. I felt a little guilty not eating Lao food, but I figured I’d have plenty opportunities over the next several weeks.
