I had never seen a 180 degree sunset until last night. Each evening, huge thunderstorms roll into Kratie and I say to myself “There goes the sunset” but somehow, a little light always manages to sneak through — much to my delight.
This evening was no different — we had just been drenched by a massive, lightning-filled downpour and thick clouds filled the sky. After the rain stopped, I pulled up a chair at my favorite spot on the river and dug into a good book, thinking I’d just read until the light died. Khmers love to hang out here and chat, buying snacks and drinks from any of a dozen carts lining the sidewalk.
So, like others, this sunset snuck up on me. It stretched across the entire horizon, with the setting sun in the middle and fiery outcroppings to the sides. It lasted an hour or more, fading slowly from the right. I didn’t have a tripod, but managed to take seven photos handheld and stitched them together into a single image. It sorta-kinda-almost captures the moment. [click on the image for full-size]
Pro tip: if you buy a drink from a cart lady, make sure to sit in her plastic chair, and not the competition’s — I created a bit of scene the day before, by accidentally sitting in a blue chair and not the appropriate red one. The cart lady next door came unglued, wagging her finger, dumping my backpack from the chair next to me, and shouting at the poor vendor. I was the only customer — all of the other chairs sat vacant for the rest of the evening.

THAT is just…..i’m speechless , over the essence of…the WONDERFUL scene You have just caused. LOL
Really tho, great picture Wes. And your writing is a helping hand for a vivid picture for us unfortunate ,untraveling pathetic souls.
I sir thank you.
p.s. Send some rain our way. Please? :-P
Aw, thanks Tavia. I will gladly send you rain — we have more than we need here. Nearly caught me out of town on a scooter today…
nicely done
nothing quite the same as the sun rising/setting over the Mekong
ps~
wereabouts are you headed next? gonna get up to Ratanakiri?
Yup! I’m leaving for Ban Lung next. Any tips?
very cool! have yet to visit this corner of the country, but definitely high on my list for a return trip. Have you stumbled upon a copy of Matt Jacobson’s “Adventure Cambodia”? Some good bits on exploring the area by motorcycle complete with GPS coordinates. I think he has a newer guide out now as well. And as always, Travelfish is a good resource for the region. We love waterfalls, looks like there are several around worth checking out. Virachey NP, Yaklom Lake–a nature-lover’s paradise
Ha! Ratanakiri jungle girl returns to the wild: http://bit.ly/cSqiSr
And… you just made so many people jealous! We’re also having loads and loads of rain. Loved this story, Wes!

Beauty!
I’ve met two people over the last two days who have both told me that a visit to the Mekong River is essential. After seeing your lovely photo, I’m convinced. And thanks for the tip about sitting in the proper chair… sounds like a stressful event :)
