Photo of the Week: The Stunning Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Mexico

I don’t know who the Mayans’ realtor was but he sure did them right on this deal. While not as large or historically important as Tikal or other complexes, the ruins at Tulum have the more dramatic setting and are well worth a taxi ride from downtown Tulum. I was there at opening time to beat the crowds, but with it being New Year’s Day whoever had the keys rolled in 45 minutes late. I shared the place with a busload of Japanese tourists.

I actually took a swim in that exact same spot like 20 years ago and I remember checking out a few windsurfers and nothing else.
The sea was very “unfriendly” when dad and myself visited Tulum but we did manage to goof around a bit on that beach.
Absolutely insanely beautiful although I was expecting a bit more ruins there.
Loved Chichen Itzá way more but I also liked Tulum.

I agree, that sea didn’t look friendly at all. I was in no hurry to go swimming.
What a beautiful place. I am adding to my list. Thanks for sharing this lovely photograph!
Beautiful!
Another benefit of getting to a place early: there wasn’t anyone around to bust me stepping past the ‘safety rope’ to get this shot :)
What a great shot/beautiful place.
Another beautiful photo…wondering if you plan on selling them? Could be another way to fund the travels?
Thanks!
Lisa
Beauty!
I did the same thing with the roped off sign, but wasn’t early enough to capture the ruins without a sea of floating tourists
Isn’t Tulum fabulous? Kudos on the early start – I spend a WHOLE LOT of time trying to get shots without people in it. Well done sir, well done. -Veronica
Thanks so much. Lovely spot.
Palace with beach view. What more could you want!
Gorgeous!! I would LOVE to own this land. How serene.
I went about 9 years ago, from Cozumel to Cancun, then to Tulum for 3 hours. You really need more time to see the entire site without rushing. Great place to visit if you cannot go to the main ruins in Mexico, a wonderful archeological site. I took tons of shots but unfortunatelly I lost all my photos. As a memento, I purchased handmade printed replica of the Maya calendar for about $40 U, I still have it somewhere.
