Varanasi, India: My All-Time Favorite Photo

November 23, 2009

I was taking photos of the Ganges river from the rooftop patio of a guesthouse, when this young girl from the house next door walked by, saw me, squealed, and ran back inside. Moments later she reappeared in this fancy pink dress and asked me to take her photo. Before I had a chance to take a single shot, her brothers and sister saw what was happening and joined in — much to her dismay. This was the best shot of the bunch and the only one where she isn’t rolling her eyes.

In the background, you can see their grandfather offering morning prayers at the family altar (or watching his ’stories’ — I’m not sure).

The baby in this pic was looking at you and thinking to himself – what is that fool up to now?

Yup, this is what it’s all about. I am obsessed with travel in India and this is the reason. The warmest, friendliest, sweetest and most open-hearted people on earth.
