While traveling in many parts of the world, you’ll run across many of these deceptive creatures. Yes, monkeys are cute. Yes, they look just like tiny, furry people. Just never turn your back on one — they can turn vicious in an instant.

In an earlier post, I covered the basic five steps to successfully using a squat toilet in the developing world. It generated a good number of comments and one of them referred to an advanced technique: “It’s near impossible to not crap on your pants. My advice is to take them off before squatting.”

This is good advice — a well-executed Pantless Squat will allow for a wider stance, better balance, use of both hands, and lower cleaning bills. However, it’s not easy as it sounds and I felt it would be irresponsible not to follow up with some tips for anyone attempting this maneuver. Read more →

One of the first places I intend to visit in Bangkok is the Buddhist Amulet Market by the Chao Praya River. The Thai people seriously love their amulets and wear them constantly for protection or blessings of all kinds. They love them so much, in fact, that it has become a multi-million dollar business — some financial research groups estimate sales over $500 million US per year. At the market, you can find amulets to fit any budget, from 10 baht to 1,000,000 baht — you can probably guess which end of that scale I’ll be looking at. Read more →

With my leave date fast approaching and my savings growing so slowly, I’ve been looking hard at my budget and trying to find any savings I can. I had $300 budgeted for vaccinations, but a little research suggested that it might be even more expensive that that. Recent posts on the Lonely Planet Forums lamented [...]

My RTW Gear Update

Continuing my spending spree (which is thankfully almost over), I’ve added a Marmot PreCip Traveler rain jacket that I picked up on sale at the REI Outlet for $65.00. It’s windproof, reasonably waterproof, and only weighs 1 pound. I also picked up a cheap silk sleep sheet at the same time, saving $15 off the [...]
