Living the good life, Barracuda Restaurant, Bang Bai

Here are a few more photos from the charming and relaxed island of Ko Chang. My favorite beaches were Lonely Beach, Long Beach, and Bang Bai — they were the least developed and most laid-back.

On Two Wheels in Thailand

Bike Culture in Thailand

March 30, 2010

The Thais are a two-wheeled culture.
As a full-time rider back in “my real life”, this thrills me to no end.

Post image for Vagabond Travel Tip: Remove the Bulk and Save Valuable Pack Space

I’ve been slowly weeding through my pack and throwing out all the non-essentials. One thing I’ve noticed is that every gadget or piece of gear comes with a custom carrying case. My Leatherman multi-tool, backpack rain cover, and water purifier all come with fancy cases that are really of no use. Why bother?

Companies like to include them because they’re a cheap way to increase the perceived value of an item, but 90% of the time they’re just added weight and –more importantly– bulk. I have a fancy padded toiletry bag that I bought, which has a convenient hanging hook and a mirror. It’s nice, but I can get the same use out of a simple mesh zipper bag and save the added bulk. I’m not really too worried about my toothbrush getting dented.

Look through your gear and see what you can live without. Some careful pruning can save you a pound or more and add some serious capacity to your pack.

Long Beach, Ko Chang

The beach here is sublime — soft white sand, turquoise water, and a steady cool breeze. My $11 bungalow sits right on the water’s edge with a hammock and a view that was stolen from a travel magazine. I should be completely content. But I’m not. [Read more...]

Welcome to Long Beach

I’m leaving Lonely Beach on Ko Chang, with it’s long sandy beach and large crowds, and heading to Long Beach, 50 km away on the eastern side of the island. Long Beach has a fairly small beach, in comparison, and is nearly deserted. I’d suggest a name swap but I don’t know who to approach [...]

Red Shirt Blues, Part II

I spent the first two days of the Red Shirt March wandering among the crowds at the main stage or traveling out to the Victory Monument to catch the tail end of a protest convoy. While the city seemed packed with demonstrators early on, after the first few days the numbers of Red Shirts began to [...]

Join My Facebook Fan Page to Win a T-Shirt from Hostel Dog

Want a cool travel-inspired T-shirt? I have a $25 gift certificate from Hosteldog.com that I can’t use now that I’m on the road, so I thought I would pass it on.
The rules are butt simple: simply become a fan of my Facebook Fan Page. On March 30th, I will randomly choose a name from [...]

Internet Access with Your iPhone in Thailand

I’ve had a few people ask me for details on this, so I thought I’d write up a brief mini-tutorial on how I did it. I’m no expert, so caveat emptor, but I did manage to get it working without too much hassle.

Photos: Ko Chang

I’ve retreated from the heat and noise of Bangkok to the relaxed island of Ko Chang. The temperature here is a good 10-15 degrees cooler and the pace is glacially slow.

First Monkey Sighting: Ko Chang, Thailand

I was sputtering my way up a steep steep hill on my rented powerhouse 110cc Honda scooter, when I spotted two dumbass tourists standing right in the middle of the road. As I swerved into the other lane, I saw that they were being entertained by a troop of monkeys. Within moments, my scooter was [...]

Red Shirt Blues, Part I

As I posted earlier, I’d been a little concerned to find that my hotel was boxed in on all sides by planned Red Shirt marches. The government tourism officials were warning foreigners to avoid all of the protest areas for safety reasons — in truth there was nothing dangerous or unsettling at all. I would [...]

The Rain Comes to Bangkok

On my last day in Bangkok a storm rolled through, rattling windows with sharp, percussive thunder and soaking the streets. It was brief, lasting maybe twenty minutes, but brought some welcome relief from the oppressive heat. When it hit, I was having breakfast in a neighborhood cafe and trying to get a handle on [...]
